For the first four years of my business, the Contact Form on my website just sat there, waiting for Mr. or Mrs. Right to come along, share their name and number and push its sad little button.
It’s not that I wasn’t getting business; I definitely was. But it was coming via direct emails or private messages on social media. This typically resulted in a lengthy, days-long game of Email Tag while we went back and forth (and back and forth again) on what services they were interested in, what times we could meet, could we reschedule five times before actually talking, and so on.
This Groundhog Day effect would continue even after the Discovery Call as I penned email after email with each different client, sending the proposal, […]
As a business owner, you’ve probably heard this over and over.
But how do you actually DO IT?
In today’s blog post, I’m breaking down my latest About Page spotlight. Steal these tips to give your own About Page a serious makeover.
HERE WE GO …
Headline isn’t about her — it’s about what the ideal client wants for that “oooh, tell me more” vibe that makes them want to keep scrolling.
Just tell them!!! The first paragraph clearly states exactly who she helps and what she does. Don’t make the reader scroll for miles to figure this out. Notice that she’s positioning everything she does as a benefit to her clients. She talks about the outcome, NOT her […]
Truth time. Not all Kate Hudson-Matthew McConaughey movies are created equal (I’m lookin’ at you, Fool’s Gold). And neither are all testimonials.
Glowing emails and love notes from clients work wonders on your ego (I actually keep a little file of these that I can go through when I need a little pick-me-up). But a few sentences about how awesome you are don’t necessarily add up to a great testimonial that will inspire your website visitors to take action.
WHY TESTIMONIALS MATTER
First, let’s quickly recap a few reasons why the right testimonials can make your website visitors feel that little glimmer of “maybe this is the right person/product/service for me.”
Street cred. When it’s not just you bragging about yourself and listing your super sweet credentials, but other business owners vouching for your skills, it shows that A) this isn’t your first […]
When it comes to your homepage, it’s easy to get caught up in the visuals and the layout. After all, that’s the fun stuff for most entrepreneurs, right? Dreaming about fonts and colors and brand boards. Spending half a day browsing Pinterest for inspiration.
Yep … even though I make my living slinging words, I’m the first to admit that I love all things photography and design. I’ll go down the Pinterest rabbit hole for hours if you let me.
However, the fact is, your photos can be amazing and your branding and design can be drool-worthy. But if the words on your website don’t do their job (and if the information isn’t presented in the right order), then your hopeful customer — that person who came to your website looking for a potential solution to their very real problem — may […]
It’s a lifestyle many cubicle warriors and entrepreneurs dream about: Wake up refreshed and practice an energizing meditation followed by a quick yoga flow. Enjoy a nice cup of coffee, then retreat to the office or studio to write the next New York Times bestseller, dream up that big idea or create your next masterpiece.
It’s pretty much how my life has turned out. Minus the meditation, yoga and bestseller. Plus two rambunctious children I need to race to school most mornings.
I’ve been working from home on and off for the better part of 15 years, first as managing editor for five lifestyle magazines and now as a business owner. And to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The office environment and co-working spaces just don’t work for me. I crave silence and space when I work. As […]
If you’ve ever wondered if, when, or why you should rebrand or update your website copy, then, friend, this blog post is for you. I’ve been in business for five years now and I had the same website since day one. Over the past year, I reached a turning point and realized it was time to kick things up a notch and take my brand and business to the next level.
In this post, I’m going to share the reasons behind why I rebranded, my inspiration, and I’ll also share how my messaging shifted. Because the truth is even more so than the imagery, pretty logo and bright new brand color palette, my positioning and copy are the most important and drastic changes I made, even though at first glance the photos and colors are what […]
